SoulDisco - Funk Specialist

A Brief Funkology...

Funk is slow, sexy, loose and danceable with the bass line as the centrepiece of the song.

James Brown, or "The Godfather of Soul," "Mr. Dynamite," "Soul Brother Number One" and "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business", as he was also called, was a pioneer of Funk with releases such as "Cold Sweat" (1967), "Mother Popcorn" (1969) and "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" (1970).

The 1970s were full of Funk with bands like Parliament, Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, Rufus & Chaka Khan, the Isley Brothers, Ohio Players, Confunkshun, Kool & The Gang, The Bar-Kays, Commodores, Roy Ayers, among others. Disco music owed a great deal to funk. Many early disco songs and performers came directly from funk backgrounds. Some disco music hits, such as all of Barry White's hits, "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby", Diana Ross's "Love Hangover", KC & The Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogie Man", "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan (also known as The Queen of Funk Soul), and Chic's "Le Freak" were basically funk with a disco beat. In 1976, Rose Royce scored a #1 hit with the classic dance-funk record, "Car Wash".
